Waimea Beach

Aerial view of Waimea Bay

This famous beach on Oahu’s North Shore is located just a few miles north of Haleiwa. It’s a well-equipped destination boasting its own life guard on duty, private restrooms, beach showers, and free spaces for parking. Aside from the huge strip of sunny sand right along the beach, Waimea also hosts a large grassy area with shaded palm trees and picnic tables with benches.

Peaceful Beach During the Summertime

Waimea Bay during the summer

Waimea Bay is a serene hangout location during the summer season with small waves and awe-inspiring sunset scenes.

Sunset from Waimea Bay beach

Without the surfers here chasing the big Hawaiian waves, the bay is typically not too crowded with plenty of beachfront room for everyone. The bite-sized parking lot does tend to get a bit on the crowded side, so we always recommend trying to get there early to secure a parking spot.

Surfing at Waimea in Winter

Along with the Banzai Pipeline, the waves that rise up on Waimea Beach during the winter season have a legendary reputation among the local surfers for being some of the biggest & best in Hawaii.

Waimea Beach surfers

The beach is packed every winter with those brave enough to take the ride of a lifetime. On occasion, the waves have even gotten so large that they’ve made their way up to the road that overlooks the bay.

Waimea Beach wave surfing

With a rocky beach, large waves, and unpredictable offshore breaks, Waimea Bay is one crazy spot to surf at, but this never stops the thrill seekers who are out there on any day when the North shore has a high surf warning.

Cliff Diving from Waimea Rock

Visitors on top of Waimea rock in Waimea bay

Although this is the main reason why many choose to visit Waimea Beach, jumping from the Waimea rock can be quite dangerous. The highest parts of the rock are located just off the shoreline where the water is sometimes as shallow as 8 feet deep and contains a number of larger rocks that rest upon the ocean floor there. The top of the rock is very slippery when wet and can be may be challenging to climb safely. Despite the fact that many (possibly even hundreds) of people jump off of it everyday during most of the year, we would recommend that you do not partake in this type of activity at Waimea Beach for your own safety.
